Acne and FoodThere are many presumptions and assumptions. The most common of all include hormone imbalance, genetic problems, living in a highly polluted environment, stress, onset of puberty, onset of the menstrual cycle and diet. Each of these possible causes has some or other basic reasons for the link between them and eruption of acne. This article would look into one of the most common of all – the diet link. The belief that there is a connection between the diet and acne stems from the fact that acne is not as common in people who live in the East (of the world) as compared to those who live in the West. If you look at the dietary habits on this basis, you would observe that the Westerners love to eat more starchy (laden with carbohydrates) and oily (usually deep fried) foods. On the other hand the people living in the East have a more bland diet concentrating on vegetables, boiled and blanched food which requires the minimum of fat/ oil. This basic comparison gave birth to the theory that the Western diet, which is heavy on the fat and carbohydrates might be the culprit here. Present-day nutritionists stress on the fact that one should eliminate as much as possible the consumption of red meet, fat, and high carbohydrate diet, further enforced this belief. The Link Between Diet And Acne Eruption Is CorrectThe bottom line is that there is no such conclusive proof that any type of food really makes any difference on the acne and the way it develops. There have been sporadic medical research studies checking the impact of fat and even chocolate on acne and nothing conclusive has been found that would solidly corroborate such belief. Some research studies have shown that a high carbohydrate diet might be able to increase the production of sebum. However, how and why sebum gets keratinized and transformed into acne has not been understood yet. Hence, there is a tiny missing link here. Overall, if you look at the hard facts, there is absolutely no such medical evidence until today that can prove conclusively that diet and acne are directly linked in any manner. Whether you consume the highest amount of fat and chocolate in your diet or not does not really influence whether or not you would break into acne – or whether the same would get aggravated at any give time as a direct result. However, this does not mean that one should eat
such a diet – just
that such habits do not really have any direct bearing on acne. Acne is one of the most controversial afflictions that affects more than 80% of the population in the West. While this is not even coming close to life threatening diseases, its psychological impact can be at times devastating. |
